Early Life and Career
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) was born in New York City on October 13, 1989, to the family of Sergio Ocasio-Cortez and Blanca Ocasio-Cortez. She has a younger brother named Gabriel, who grew up with her in New York.
Her father, Sergio was born to a Puerto Rican family based in the Bronx, and he is an architect. He operated a small business before his demise in 2008. Her mother was born in Puerto Rico, and she cleans houses for a living.
AOC lived with her family in the Bronx area of Parkchester. When she was five years of age, her family migrated to an apartment in the suburban neighborhood of Yorktown Heights. She attended Yorktown High School, where she was known for her intelligence and academic exploits. She came 2nd in the ‘Microbiology category’ of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in 2007.
After finishing high school, she enrolled in Boston University, obtaining a degree in international relations and economics. In 2016, her parents sold off the family home in Yorktown, New York, for $355,000.
As a student, Alexandria served as an intern for United States Senator, Ted Kennedy, who assisted the family in a lengthy probate battle to settle her dad’s estate following his death in 2008. Ocasio-Cortez lost her father in her second year in college, which affected her. However, in 2011, she was able to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree in international relations and economics.
After college, she briefly worked as a waitress and bartender to help her mother and family from getting their Yorktown house foreclosed on. After then, she launched Brook Avenue Press, a publishing firm that projected the city of Bronx in a positive light. She also worked for a non-profit organization called National Hispanic Institute.
In 2016, Alexandria worked as an organizer for Bernie Sander’s presidential campaign. She traveled across the U.S and touched places like Michigan, Flint, and the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota to communicate with the residents affected by the water crisis and the Dakota Access Pipeline. She was greatly influenced by the activists working in these places and harnessed the idea of being an activist.
At this time, she began seeing a new life in politics. She found out that politics was more easily accessible than she had thought.
On a fateful day after she visited North Dakota, she received a phone call from Brand New Congress, an organization willing to recruit progressive candidates. She started her campaign in April 2017 before running for Congress in 2018.
Political Career

In April 2017, AOC began her political campaign while working at a taqueria in Union Square, New York City. She became the first person since 2004 to challenge and defeat a 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley, the Democratic Caucus Chair, in the primary race.
Because she was underfinanced compared to Joe Crowley, she turned to grassroots politics, where she established a solid mobilization campaign. She also made decisions not to receive donations from corporations. Although many high-profile individuals and political figures endorsed Crawley, Alexandria benefited from different endorsements from organizations like Democracy for America and MoveOn.
She earned over 57% of the vote in the primary elections, which many media outlets regarded as the biggest upset victory in the 2018 midterm election primaries. After the victory in the primaries, she went on to face the Republican nominee, Anthony Pappas, in the November general election.
Pappas didn’t actively campaign for the seat, and AOC was widely endorsed by various progressive organizations and political figures, including the former U.S president, Barack Obama, and distinguished Senator Bernie Sanders.
She won 78% of the votes cast in the November 6 election, helping the Democratic secure victory in the midterm elections. This victory allowed the Democrats to become the majority party in the House of Representatives.
Her victory received a lot of attention from the media. At 29, AOC became the youngest member of the 116th Congress and the youngest woman in American history to serve in the U.S Congress. She continued to attract great attention throughout her first tenure in office, even on par with the 2020 presidential candidates, Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
She is also part of an informal group of progressive members of the U.S Congress known as “The Squad”, which constitutes Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush, Ilhan Omar, Jamaal Bowman, and Rashida Tlaib. The Squad represents some of the youngest and most vibrant members of Congress.
Considering her political affiliations and positions, Ocasio-Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
As an activist, she is a supporter of different reforms and policies such as the tuition-free public college and trade school, single-payer Medicare for All, guaranteed family leave, canceling outstanding student debt, privatized prisons, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a Green New Deal, and more strict gun control policies.
Also, she has been vocal about making progressive environmental reforms and also describes climate change as a great threat to the United States of America as well as the entire world in general. Her first piece of legislation, the Green New Deal, advocates for a transition to an electrical grid that runs on 100% renewable energy that will end the use of fossil fuels.
At the same time, she proposed various reforms that would impose more taxes on the wealthy to help fund the Green New Deal. In addition, she has been very vocal about granting citizens of Puerto Rico further civil rights, including disaster relief and voting rights.
She defeated John Cummings in the 2020 election and was reelected to the U.S. Congress.

Thanks for sharing!
This power-hungry commie went from “too broke to move to DC” when she was elected in 2018 to a net worth of over $1.5M on an annual salary of $174,000 – which isn’t all that much in a city where the cost of living is so high. How does one go from poor to millionaire in 5 short years as a public servant unless they’re on the take? She may be a dimwit, but she has learned how to work the system. This is why we loathe congress creatures. Especially those who have never worked a legitimate job and have sucked off the government teat for decades.
she dont pay shit she get 3 grand expense money and shits on everyone in her district. what has she accomplished in politics…NOTHING she a waste of taxpayers money.
she saw polesi scamming stocks, vote for bank bailouts. at first she tried to stop it. But if you cannt bet them join them. Companies for all that eco-nonsense lining her pocket. She doesnt pay for shit cause they are good at branding every meal they have. Biden on his first day gave companies write offs that Trump took away so that little miss patunia could wear a dress ‘Tax the rich’. At the end of the year companies dont pay taxes under dumbos. they hide their money abroad and claim to be globalist as taxpayers pay. wtf
Everybody relax, I figured it out. She used to be a bartender and she like, dude, like totally forgot about all the extra income in tips, etc. she used to save in between her mattress and box spring. She was really busy, ya know, getting elected to Con-grease and like, giving money to all the less fortunate people she met after obtaining office, like other politicians, PAC’s, various activists groups and their leaders, a few CEO’s here and there and some of her neighbors in her new “secured” community (communities/compounds/etc.) and she like, totally, forgot to report it. It’s an innocent mistake that could happen to any of us, so don’t judge, ’cause it’s, like, not cool and totally bogus of you, dude. Once she gets the Green New Deal passed everybody’s gonna be, like, totally stoked about her, yaah? Awesome!
Don’t you geniuses understand her net salary opposed to gross salary and life expenses?
After rent, food, and other expenses she can probably “invest” maybe $25K per year.
Use that number then tell me how she “got lucky” with stocks.
She could be worth more than $1 million
From the President down to the most junior member of congress, these are political jobs that off the record practically guarantee in four (4) years or less you will become a millionaire or more. Did you ever take a look at the minimum requirements it takes to be elected to a national political level? If you haven’t, please do. They do not have any education requirements, no prior political experience requirements at any level. They only have citizenship/age/residency requirements. And we pay them an “opening salary” that’s five (5) times the U.S. median salary. If you can get enough $$ supporting you, you too can get any one of these jobs.
Investigate and prosecute.
How do they arrive at the $1.5 Million net worth? No homes were listed. Investments? Well anyone can say/write it but where is the proof. I’m not defending her just pointing out the shoddy reporting here. I don’t agree with most of her political positions but let’s at least have decent reporting with sources.
How do you arrive at $885K in salary? Two full terms at $174K will be $696K when it ends in January 2023. Her ‘publishing business’ went belly-up, and she still owes taxes on that venture. She also still carries student loan debts. What personal expenses do you believe are covered by the taxpayers>?
Ummm… she’s been in office 3.5 years, sworn in 2019.
3.5x 174,000 = 609000. Net worth 1.5 mill. Please take the
“Difference” of the two. A difficult task for many. I would
LOVE that ROI ( ummm return on investment). The greatest
Traders in the world would love that return. She’s basically a Wall
Street guru secretly hiding as a Congress. Wow! So impressed.
Especially because her political leaning is the anthesis of individual
wealth accumulation. If she hangs around for a few years, she’ll
Really have a bundle. You go girl!!!! Ummm… can you actually
do something?? Seems like inflation is a bit high, gas prices up
a tad, drugs POURING in, youth dying of drug overdoses(open
Border), rape and murder of birthing people (umm. Women) and children
On the border. I think her good conscious will step in to help these
Struggling folks with a monitary donation soon ! What a gal!!
I enjoy your pithy remarks. You pose the question if her ‘good conscious’ will step in to help those less fortunate. I will leave it to the readers to answer that question as I do not wish to become a target of the current administration.
She makes way too much money and needs to give the money to people who are struggling for food and clothing. Shame on her for making this much money for being lazy and only going to lavish balls while poor people struggle.
She’s corrupt! Didn’t take her long to get her 1st Million! Wash. DC makes me sick! They suck!
when your salary is a 175k a year and you don’t have to spend much of anything to live off. It’s not hard to generate wealth with investments.
“Alexandria Ocasio (AOC) owns over 6 real estate properties, 5 Cars, 2 Luxury Yachts. Alexandria Ocasio’s Assets also includes Cash reserves of over $3 Million. Alexandria Ocasio (AOC) also owns an investment portfolio of 11 stocks that is valued at $15 Million.”
Her net worth is $29 Million.
“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) attracts high donations and gifts from wealthy businesses and Wall Street investors. In the past 24 months, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has received over $7 Million in direct and indirect donations from such parties.”
They get rich – we get poorer.
Absolutely none of that is true.
Just Googled it and it says its true! bwhahahaha
So JD “just Googled it” to find his bias confirmed ?
S/he clearly did subscribe to the own bias-buble
which is long debunked by multiple sites.
bwhahahaha
Just search with another search engine and find out the truth 😉
Multiple fact checks show that to be false.
She was whining about not able to afford housing in the DC area when she first came to office. I would characterize Expensive housing as spending much of anything .
How completely naive can you be? Do you think that YOU have the very same ‘investments’ opportunity she does? Exactly WHAT investments turn a hundred grand into a million in only a couple of years??? What kind of delusional puppet are you?
I don’t think you understand what corrupt means. If your politics do not agree with hers, that does not make her corrupt. She is certainly well to do, but there is nothing corrupt about earning money, especially for someone who works as hard as she evidently does. She had her own publishing business before she ran for Congress. She made $885K in salary so far and with benefits she has most of her expenses covered. Where do you see any corruption.

AOC is a member of the Democratic Socialist Party and believes in socialism and the equitable distribution of wealth (according to things she’s been quoted as saying). So maybe the corruption comes in where she’s worth over a million now and hasn’t “redistributed” any of it to her poorer constituents. If you can’t walk the walk, don’t talk the talk. Redistribution is just for those poor snooks who can’t turn a job as a bartender into millions. She’s turned a salary of $175,000 as a House of Representatives member into at least $1.5 million! Not a bad trick for a socialist!!!
Now do Boebert at $41 million after only two years in office as a high school dropout.
AMEN!
Boebert is a capitalist, AOC a socialist.
Happy to help
This article explains how much of her income was tracked but provides nothing to explain the 1.5 million they claim she is worth. She owns no stocks and no property’s or businesses. Another site that shows all of her assets has her net worth at 100 thousand dollars. And is likely a more accurate assessment given the disclosure requirements for congressional members.
