Unidentified assailants shell a Benue town, killing 16 and destroying more than 50 homes

The Wandor, Mbaikyor community in the Mbalom Council Ward of Gwer East Local Government Area, LGA of Benue State was attacked on Thursday evening by herders who are believed to be armed. The attack claimed the life of a former army officer and thirteen others.

Over fifty homes, shacks, farms, and food warehouses were leveled in eleven different communities by the invading army.

According to the DAILY POST, the assault occurred almost six years after armed herders attacked St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ukpor Parish, Mbalom Gwer East LGA. In that incident, seventeen parishioners and two priests were killed.

The armed marauders, estimated at forty in number, ambushed the village at approximately 7 o’clock in the evening and began firing on the unsuspecting inhabitants, according to an anonymous attack survivor.

The Wandor community is currently experiencing relative calm, according to Mrs. Comfort Agbo, the caretaker chairman of Gwer East LGA, who confirmed the news. So far, sixteen bodies have been located. Two of them are wounded and are in the hospital for treatment.

We suspect armed ranchers of attacking and killing my folks. At this very moment, the security detail is transferring the remains to the crematorium.

The Police Commissioner is en route to the scene of the incident for an evaluation, according to Superintendent Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer, who verified the development.

Reportedly, a group from the community was also led by Sam Ode, the state’s deputy governor.
