The annual Ramadan fast will begin on March 11 and 12, 2024, according to the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. The exact dates will be determined after the moon is visible after sunset on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

In a statement, Prof. Salisu Shehu, the NSCIA’s Deputy Secretary-General, said that the council had asked Muslims to seek out the crescent of Ramadan 1445 on the specified day, which is the 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH.

The statement emphasized the importance of Muslims reporting crescent sightings to the National Moon Sighting Committee.

As stated in the statement, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) extends its warmest congratulations to the entire Muslim Ummah on the joyous occasion of the upcoming 1445 AH Ramadan Fast. The NSCIA is headed by His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also the Sultan of Sokoto.

The statement went on to say that the council hoped Allah would allow all Muslims to take part in the devotional practice of Ibadah and reap its full advantages.

On Sunday, March 10, 2024, which is the 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH, the President-General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, following the recommendation of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), calls for all Muslims in the country to seek out the crescent moon of Ramadan 1445 AH as soon as the sun goes down.

His Eminence will proclaim Monday, March 11, 2024, as the first day of Ramadan 1445 AH if Muslims of spotless character see the crescent on that evening.

“However, if the crescent is not visible on that particular day, then Tuesday, March 12, 2024, will be considered the first day of Ramadan 1445 AH,” the notification partially stated.

The statement went on to urge the “endowed Muslims” to help those in need and warned merchants against making excessive profit by hoarding food or charging exorbitant prices while the fast was in effect.

It cautioned merchants against excessive price increases for consumer items or stockpiling food supplies during the fast.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of Muslims using the holy month of Ramadan to pray for the Palestinians, requesting that Allah provides them with divine help and frees them from their oppressors.
